Frantic Elevators

Did you know frontman Mick Hucknall was part of a punk band before Simply Red? The band members met at a Sex Pistols concert. For Hucknall, it marked the beginning of his musical career. Judge for yourself...

Instant Success!

The debut album Picture Book (1985) was an immediate hit, launching the band into the spotlight. The single “Holding Back the Years” reached number 1 in the United States and became one of their most iconic tracks. Hucknall wrote the song when he was only 17 years old.

Break-up

In 2009, Mick Hucknall announced that Simply Red would be disbanding after 25 glorious years. He wanted to close the chapter on Simply Red to focus on other projects, both in and outside music. As you might guess, the break-up was only temporary! The final concert before the split took place on December 29, 2010, in London.

They’re Back!

Luckily, the break-up of Simply Red wasn’t permanent. In 2015, just five years after their last show, Hucknall announced the band’s return to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a new tour and the album Big Love. Hucknall later admitted he found it hard to let go of Simply Red.

Politician or Frontman?

In addition to being Simply Red’s frontman, Mick Hucknall was actively involved in politics, openly supporting the UK’s Labour Party. He raised funds for the party and was outspoken on political issues, which sometimes earned him both praise and controversy.

Simply Red will be performing on November 12, 2025, at the Sportpaleis.
