Live Music from 'The Broken Circle Breakdown' at Sportpaleis

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, actors Veerle Baetens and Johan Heldenbergh, along with composer Bjorn Eriksson, will bring an emotional touch to the 'Avond van de Filmmuziek'. They will perform 'If I Needed You' from the Oscar-nominated film The Broken Circle Breakdown live at the Sportpaleis, accompanied by the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Brazilian conductor Alexandra Arrieche.

From film classic to musical icon

The Broken Circle Breakdown, directed by Felix Van Groeningen, garnered worldwide acclaim in 2012 and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. The soundtrack, composed by guitarist and musician Bjorn Eriksson, was instrumental in the film’s success. Eriksson, known for his work with bands like Zita Swoon, will join Baetens and Heldenbergh on stage for this moving live performance.

A passion for bluegrass and americana

Since filming The Broken Circle Breakdown, Baetens and Heldenbergh have grown into true ambassadors for Americana and bluegrass.
“The bluegrass genre was completely new to me before starting this film. But the more I immersed myself in it, the more I discovered these fantastic artists. The themes in their songs often touch on death or lost love, yet they’re delivered in such a light-hearted, musical way. I love it, and I can’t wait to bring it to the Sportpaleis,” says Veerle Baetens.

The Night of Film Music promises a dazzling program, featuring live music from legendary film composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Ludovico Einaudi, and Thomas Newman. Alongside the piece from The Broken Circle Breakdown, audiences will be treated to iconic scores from James Bond, Inception, Once Upon a Time in the West, Interstellar, Gladiator, The Intouchables, and Star Wars. The music will be enhanced with cinematic visuals on a grand screen, creating an unforgettable experience.
